Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to transfer car ownership in Spain?
With GestoríaTráfico we complete the DGT transfer in 24–48 hours after receiving the signed documents. The buyer receives a provisional circulation permit the same day the file is submitted to Traffic Authorities (Jefatura de Tráfico).
How much does it cost to transfer a car in Spain?
Our fee is €59 including VAT. On top of that you must pay the DGT fee (€55.70 for cars, €27.85 for motorbikes) and the Transfer Tax (ITP, usually 4%–8% of the fiscal value depending on the region). We calculate everything for you upfront — no hidden costs.
What documents do I need to transfer a car as a foreigner in Spain?
You need: NIE or TIE (or passport + NIE), the vehicle's technical inspection card (Ficha Técnica) with a valid ITV, the current circulation permit (Permiso de Circulación), and the purchase contract signed by buyer and seller. If you don't have an NIE yet, we can guide you through the process.
Can I transfer a car in Spain without an NIE?
No. To register a vehicle in your name at the DGT you need a Spanish tax ID: NIE for non-residents, TIE for residents, or DNI for Spanish citizens. A tourist passport alone is not enough.
Do I have to pay tax when I buy a used car in Spain?
Yes. The buyer pays the Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales (ITP), a regional transfer tax on second-hand vehicles. Rates range from 4% (most regions) to 8% (Catalonia, Cantabria) of the fiscal value published by the Ministry of Finance. New cars pay VAT instead.
Can I complete the car transfer 100% online?
Yes. The whole process is digital: upload documents, sign electronically by SMS/WhatsApp, and receive the new circulation permit by email. No need to visit a DGT office.
What happens if the seller has unpaid fines or liens on the car?
We run a free check on the vehicle before starting. If there are unpaid road tax (IVTM), DGT fines, or liens (embargos, reservas de dominio), we tell you before you pay so you can decide whether to proceed.
