    Frequently asked questions

What is the DGT environmental sticker in Spain?

The DGT environmental sticker (distintivo ambiental) is a coloured label placed on your windscreen that classifies your vehicle by emissions: 0 (blue, zero emissions), ECO (blue/green), C (green), B (yellow). Cars without a sticker are the most polluting and cannot enter Low Emission Zones (ZBE) in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and dozens of other Spanish cities.

Do I need a DGT sticker on my car in Spain?

It's not obligatory nationwide, but in practice yes: since 2023 all cities over 50,000 inhabitants must operate a Low Emission Zone, and without a sticker your car cannot enter them. Fines for driving in a ZBE without the correct sticker range from €100 to €200.

How do I get a DGT environmental sticker in Spain?

You can order it at any authorised post office (Correos) or through a gestoría. You need the vehicle's registration certificate. The sticker is issued based on the emissions data in the DGT database — it cannot be upgraded by request.

How much does the DGT environmental sticker cost?

The sticker itself costs €5 at Correos. If you order it through our gestoría with home delivery it's €14.95 including postage and application. There is no annual fee — you buy it once and it stays with the vehicle for life.

Can a foreign-plated car get a DGT sticker?

No. Only Spanish-registered vehicles can receive the DGT environmental sticker. If you're driving a foreign-plated car in Spain long-term you must register it here first — we handle the full registration process.

Which cars get the 0, ECO, C and B sticker?

0 (zero emissions): 100% electric, plug-in hybrid with 40+ km range, fuel-cell. ECO: mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids under 40 km, CNG, LPG. C: petrol from 2006 onwards (Euro 4+) and diesel from Sept 2015 onwards (Euro 6). B: petrol from 2001 onwards (Euro 3) and diesel from 2006 onwards (Euro 4/5). Older vehicles have no sticker.

Where do I place the DGT sticker on my car?

In the bottom-right corner of the windscreen (from inside the car), so it's visible from outside. For motorbikes, it goes on a visible part of the vehicle. The DGT strongly recommends displaying it — camera systems in Madrid Central and other ZBEs still read the plate, but a visible sticker helps at manual checkpoints.
