Frequently asked questions
How do I scrap a car in Spain?
You must take it to an authorised treatment facility (CAT — Centro Autorizado de Tratamiento), officially known as a 'desguace autorizado'. They will issue a Certificado de Destrucción, and with that document the DGT permanently deregisters the vehicle (baja definitiva). Only authorised CATs can legally scrap vehicles in Spain — informal scrapyards don't count.
How much does it cost to scrap a car in Spain?
The scrapping itself at an authorised CAT is free of charge — even if the car doesn't run, the facility keeps the metal and parts. The only cost is our gestoría fee to handle the DGT paperwork (baja definitiva) and, if needed, transport to the CAT. Total from around €90 all-in.
Can I scrap a UK or foreign-plated car in Spain?
Yes, but the process is different. If the vehicle is not Spanish-registered, you cannot request a baja definitiva at the DGT because it isn't in their system. You still take it to an authorised CAT to get the Certificado de Destrucción, and then you must send that certificate to the DVLA (UK) or the original country's authority to complete deregistration abroad.
What documents do I need to scrap a car in Spain?
You need the Permiso de Circulación (V-5), the Ficha Técnica (ITV card), your DNI/NIE and the last IVTM (road tax) receipt paid. If the car is not in your name, you also need the sale/donation contract or the death certificate + inheritance documents. We collect everything digitally and submit it for you.
Do I have to pay road tax before scrapping?
Yes — the town hall must issue an IVTM certificate confirming there are no debts. If there are unpaid years, they must be settled before the DGT will process the baja. Once scrapping is completed you can also request a pro-rated refund of the current year's IVTM for the remaining quarters.
How long does the baja definitiva take?
Once we receive the Certificado de Destrucción from the CAT, we submit it to the DGT and the vehicle is deregistered the same day in most cases (24–48 hours maximum). You'll receive an official DGT document confirming the definitive scrapping.
What if the car doesn't run — can it still be scrapped?
Yes. Non-running cars are the most common case. The CAT can arrange collection (grúa) for a small fee, or you can bring it yourself if the tyres are in reasonable condition. The scrapping itself is still free.
