Who can exchange their licence?
- You must be a legal resident in Spain (NIE/TIE or DNI).
- Your licence must have been obtained before you became a resident in Spain (exception: South Korea).
- Non-EU licences must be valid. You can drive with them for 6 months from the date you obtain residency.
- Professional licences (C/D): the DGT usually requires additional tests.

With a non-EU licence you can drive in Spain for 6 months from the date you obtain legal residency. After that you need a Spanish licence, so exchange it in time. Frequently asked questions
Can I exchange my UK driving licence in Spain?
Yes. Spain and the UK have had an agreement since 16/03/2023, so UK licences can be exchanged without a test if you are a legal resident in Spain. The licence must be valid. Our price is €135 all-inclusive.
How do I get a Spanish driving licence if I already have a foreign one?
If you live in Spain and your licence comes from the EU/EEA or from a country with an agreement, you exchange it for a Spanish one without a test. We file the exchange online: €135 all-inclusive (EU €115).
Can I swap my driving licence in Spain online?
Yes. We submit the exchange online to the DGT (Spanish traffic authority). You only go once to your local Jefatura de Tráfico (DGT provincial office) to hand in your licence and collect the provisional permit.
How long can I drive in Spain with a foreign licence?
With a non-EU licence you can drive for 6 months from the date you obtain legal residency. After that you need a Spanish licence. EU/EEA licences remain valid in Spain while they are in force.
Do I need a medical certificate?
Yes. The DGT requires a driver medical certificate (informe de aptitud psicofísica) from an authorised centre. It costs around €35 and is paid separately. In Barcelona you can get it at our centre.
Can I exchange my licence without a DGT appointment?
Yes. As a registered gestoría we submit the exchange online, with no appointment. You only go once to the local Jefatura de Tráfico to hand in your licence and collect the provisional permit.
Do I need to speak Spanish?
No. We speak English: we help you in English by phone, WhatsApp and at our Barcelona office, and the form is in English too. We handle the DGT paperwork for you.
How long does the exchange take?
It depends on the DGT and on the verification with the country that issued your licence. We keep you informed of every step.
What documents do I need?
NIE/TIE or DNI, your original driving licence, a photo and the medical certificate. We prepare the application and the rest of the paperwork.
Can I exchange a US driving licence in Spain?
No. The USA has no agreement with Spain (neither do Canada, Mexico or China), so the licence cannot be exchanged. You would need to take the Spanish driving test at a driving school. We do not process Venezuelan licence exchanges.
How much does it cost?
€135 all-inclusive for non-EU licences (including the UK) and €115 for EU/EEA licences: our fee, VAT and the DGT fee. Professional licences (C/D) from outside the EU cost €215. Medical certificate extra (around €35).
Can I exchange an expired or lost EU licence?
Yes. EU/EEA licences can be exchanged even if they have expired or been lost, for €115 all-inclusive.
