Frequently asked questions
Which countries can exchange their driving licence in Spain without taking a test?
Spain has bilateral agreements with EU/EEA countries, the UK, Switzerland, and many Latin American and other nations including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Morocco, Algeria, South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and Turkey. Drivers from these countries can exchange their licence without a driving exam. US, Canadian and Australian licences currently require a full Spanish driving test.
How long do I have to exchange my foreign driving licence after moving to Spain?
You have 6 months from the date you become a Spanish resident (empadronamiento) to exchange your licence. After 6 months, driving with a non-EU licence is not legal in Spain — you must have exchanged it or hold a valid international permit.
Can I exchange my UK driving licence in Spain after Brexit?
Yes. As of the 2023 agreement between the UK and Spain, British licences can be exchanged for a Spanish one without taking a test, provided you are a legal resident in Spain. The process requires a medical certificate (Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores), your UK licence, TIE/NIE and a passport-size photo.
What documents do I need to exchange my licence in Spain?
1) Original foreign driving licence (still valid), 2) TIE or NIE (green residency certificate isn't enough — DGT requires photo ID), 3) Medical certificate from an authorised Centro de Reconocimiento (approx. €40–€60), 4) Passport-size photo, 5) Empadronamiento certificate. GestoríaTráfico handles the DGT paperwork and appointment for you.
How much does it cost to exchange a driving licence in Spain?
Our gestoría fee is €89. On top of that you pay the DGT fee (€28.75) and the medical certificate (around €50). Total: approximately €165–€180. You save on time, waiting queues, and DGT online appointment system.
How long does the licence exchange take?
The Spanish DGT typically issues the new licence within 30–90 days depending on region and workload. Meanwhile, you receive a provisional driving authorisation that lets you drive legally in Spain.
Do I need to speak Spanish to exchange my licence?
No. Our service is fully in English. We handle all DGT communication, translations, and the medical centre booking. You just provide the documents and attend one short medical exam.
