Why you exchange instead of renewing

Once you are a resident in Spain, the DGT (Spanish traffic authority) expects you to hold a Spanish licence. Instead of renewing your licence in your home country, you exchange it for a Spanish one, which you then renew in Spain like any Spanish driver.

  • EU / EEA licence (Italy, Germany, France, Portugal…): €115 all-inclusive, even if it has expired or you have lost it.
  • UK and other countries with an agreement: €135 all-inclusive. The licence must be valid.
  • Countries without an agreement (USA, Canada, Mexico, China): the licence cannot be exchanged; you must take the Spanish driving test. We do not process Venezuelan licence exchanges.

Already have a Spanish licence? See renewing a Spanish driving licence (in Spanish). For the full exchange guide, see exchange your driving licence in Spain.

Frequently asked questions

How do I renew my Italian driving licence in Spain?

If you live in Spain, you don't renew it with Italy: you exchange it for a Spanish licence. As an EU licence it costs €115 all-inclusive, even if it has expired or you have lost it.

Can I renew my German or French driving licence in Spain?

Yes, in the same way: as a resident in Spain you exchange your EU licence for a Spanish one. €115 all-inclusive, also if it has expired or been lost.

How do I renew a UK driving licence in Spain?

Since Brexit a UK licence is not treated as an EU licence. If you live in Spain you exchange it for a Spanish one under the Spain–UK agreement (in force since 16/03/2023). It must be valid. €135 all-inclusive.

My EU licence has expired. Can I still exchange it?

Yes. EU/EEA licences can be exchanged even if they have expired: €115 all-inclusive.

I have lost my EU driving licence. What can I do?

You can still exchange it. We handle the exchange of a lost EU/EEA licence for €115 all-inclusive.

My non-EU licence has expired. Can I exchange it?

No. Licences from outside the EU/EEA (including the UK) must be valid to be exchanged. If yours has expired, contact us and we will look at your case.

Do I need a DGT appointment?

No. We submit the exchange online to the DGT (Spanish traffic authority). You only go once to your local Jefatura de Tráfico to hand in your licence and collect the provisional permit.

Do I need a medical certificate?

Yes. The DGT requires a driver medical certificate from an authorised centre. It costs around €35 and is paid separately, if you don't have it yet.

I already have a Spanish licence. Can you renew it?

Renewing a Spanish licence is a different procedure. See our page on renewing a Spanish driving licence (in Spanish).
