Frequently asked questions
What does 'exporting a car from Spain' mean?
It is the process of officially deregistering a Spanish-plated vehicle at the DGT because it will be permanently taken abroad — either back to your country of origin, to another EU country, or overseas. Once the DGT issues the 'baja por exportación', the car can no longer circulate on Spanish plates.
How much does it cost to export a car from Spain?
The DGT does not charge tax stamps for a baja por exportación (unlike a standard baja definitiva or a transfer). The cost is basically the gestoría fee — around €90–€120 all-in depending on the case. Physical shipping/transport of the vehicle is separate and depends on destination.
What documents do I need to export my car from Spain?
Permiso de Circulación (V-5), Ficha Técnica (ITV card), your DNI/NIE or passport, last paid IVTM receipt, and a document confirming the export (buyer's ID abroad, bill of lading, or a signed declaration of export). We prepare the DGT submission for you.
Do I need a valid ITV to export the car?
For the Spanish side (baja por exportación) an in-date ITV is not required — you're deregistering the vehicle, not driving it long-term in Spain. However, the destination country will typically demand a valid technical inspection to re-register it locally, so most owners pass the ITV before shipping.
Can I export a car that is still on finance?
No. If the vehicle has a lien or reserva de dominio at the Registro de Bienes Muebles, the DGT will refuse the baja por exportación. You must first cancel the financing (levantamiento de carga) and get the release certificate. We can check for liens before you start.
What happens with the Spanish plates and V-5?
Both must be handed in or destroyed. The DGT issues an export certificate that acts as proof for the destination country to open the local registration file. You'll receive a digital and physical copy of that certificate.
Do I need to pay Spanish road tax the year I export?
Yes for the quarters up to the export date. Once we submit the baja por exportación, you can request a pro-rated refund of the remaining quarters from the town hall. We handle that claim as part of the service.
